Phillies 9, Cubs 8: Chase Utley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Carlos Ruiz and Darin Ruf hit home runs as host Philadelphia snapped a five-game skid.
Ruf and Domonic Brown each drove in two runs for the Phillies, who won for only the second time in their last 15 games. Donnie Murphy and Anthony Rizzo homered for Chicago, which has dropped five straight and eight of nine.
Philadelphia scored in five of the first six innings and tagged Edwin Jackson (7-12) for seven runs on 10 hits over five frames. The offensive outburst gave Kyle Kendrick (10-8) enough time to settle in after a rough beginning, as the right-hander allowed five runs - four earned - on six hits over six innings.
The Cubs led 5-2 after Murphy's three-run blast in the second and Rizzo's solo shot in the third, but it was all Phillies from that point. Brown and Ruf drove in runs in the third to cut the margin to 5-4, and the Phillies took control in the fifth, tying it on Utley's RBI triple, taking the lead on Brown's run-scoring groundout and making it 7-5 on Ruf's long ball to left.
Michael Young added an insurance run with an RBI double in the sixth and Ruiz hit a blast to left in the eighth as the Phillies posted their highest scoring total since July 19. Chicago's Nate Schierholtz delivered a two-out, two-run single in the ninth and scored when Brown dropped Starlin Castro's fly ball in left, but Jonathan Papelbon induced another fly ball to left from Thomas Neal to strand the tying run at third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ruf has reached base safely in 33 consecutive games dating to last season - every game he has started in the majors - matching the franchise record set by Utley from Sept. 7, 2008, to April 22, 2009. … The Cubs' four-run second snapped a string of 24 consecutive scoreless innings. … Brown went 1-for-4 in his return to the lineup after being on the disabled list since July 23 with a concussion. OF Laynce Nix was designated for assignment to free up a roster spot.
