Cubs 6, Rangers 2: Carlos Villanueva worked seven strong innings and Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer as Chicago earned a split of the rain-shortened two-game series with visiting Texas.
Alfonso Soriano added his first homer of the season during a four-run rally in the second and Luis Valbuena drove in two for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game slide.
Villanueva (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six. The right-hander has surrendered a total of three runs in 21 innings but had been let down by the bullpen in his previous two turns.
Rangers starter Alexi Ogando (2-1) was not quite as sharp and ran into trouble in the third when David DeJesus led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Ogando then walked Starlin Castro and surrendered back-to-back homers to Rizzo and Soriano to hand Chicago a 5-0 lead.
Ian Kinsler led off the fourth with a solo homer for Texas but Valbuena, who had singled in a run in the second, restored the five-run advantage with an RBI double in the fifth. Nelson Cruz added a solo home run for the Rangers, who have dropped two of three to finish their six-game trip with a 3-3 mark.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Castro doubled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. … Soriano, who is 8-for-17 over the last four games, did not hit his first home run until May 15 last season before finishing with 32. … Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland went 0-for-3 and is 1-for-17 in his last six games.
