Padres 6, Dodgers 3 (11): Logan Forsythe ripped a two-run single to snap a tie in the top of the 11th inning as San Diego denied Los Angeles in its bid for a third consecutive walkoff victory.
Cameron Maybin led off the pivotal frame by ripping a first-pitch fastball from John Ely (0-1) into center field for a single. Everth Cabrera attempted a sacrifice bunt, but third baseman Luis Cruz's throw hit him in the back - allowing both runners to advance into scoring position. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Forsythe lined a fastball into center field to plate Maybin and Cabrera.
Chase Headley provided insurance with an RBI single off Ely, who was making his season debut.
Andre Ethier recorded his 1,000th career hit in impressive fashion as he belted his third homer in four contests. Mark Ellis collected three hits and Shane Victorino slapped an RBI single for the Dodgers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end but remained 4 1/2 games behind National League West-leading San Francisco. The Giants lost 8-6 in 11 innings to Arizona.
Los Angeles dropped 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second wild-card spot. The Cardinals cruised to a 5-1 triumph over the New York Mets earlier on Tuesday.
Tommy Layne (1-0) picked up the victory after striking out the side in the 10th inning. Luke Gregerson retired the side in the 11th for his fourth save.
Yasmani Grandal belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning to tie the contest at 3-3. Chris Denorfia led off the contest by launching a first-pitch changeup out of the park for the Padres, who snapped a three-game losing skid after winning 10 of their previous 11
Matt Guerrier relieved starter Clayton Kershaw and allowed a single to Headley before Yasmani Grandal deposited a 1-0 fastball over the wall in right-center field to tie the game at 3-3.
