Rockies 8, Padres 4: Jonathan Herrera and Michael Cuddyer hit two-run homers and Chris Nelson also drove in a pair as host Colorado rode a five-run second inning to victory.
Juan Nicasio (1-0) allowed four runs, seven hits and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings, and also drove in a run as the Rockies beat the Padres for the second straight game after losing the previous four.
Chase Headley homered twice and went 3-for-4 for the Padres (3-10), who have the worst record in the majors.
Clayton Richard (1-1) gave up eight runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings to fall to 1-4 against Colorado. He has allowed 22 runs in 14 1/3 innings in his last three starts at Coors Field.
Nelson's two-run double in the second gave Colorado a 2-1 lead and Herrera followed with an opposite-field homer to right. Dexter Fowler added an RBI double.
Cuddyer's homer came in the fifth before Nicasio knocked in Nelson with a single in the sixth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was given the night off by manager Jim Tracy despite being 8-for-15 with three home runs against Richard. Tulowitzki made two errors Tuesday and has six errors so far in 2012, matching last season's total. Tulowitzki and is 1-for-14 in his last four games. ... Headley, who grew up about 80 miles south of Coors Field in Fountain, Colo., went 6-for-13 with five runs scored and four RBIs in the series. ... Cuddyer left the game in the seventh after he fouled a pitch off his big left toe earlier in the game. ... The Padres have struck out a major-league leading 109 times.
