Pittsburgh's National League wild card lead shrunk to one-half game over Los Angeles and 1 1/2 over St. Louis.

Venable's two-out single in the second drove in Cameron Maybin to make it 3-0.
The Pirates got on the board when Neil Walker drove in Andrew McCutchen with a single in the sixth.
Volquez left with two on in the seventh before reliever Brad Barch struck out McCutchen to end the threat. Pittsburgh again had two runners on in the eighth, but Luke Gregerson retired Gaby Sanchez and Rod Barajas.
