Royals 3, Athletics 0: Danny Duffy threw six innings of
one-hit ball as Kansas City evened the series in a rain-shortened game at Oakland.
Duffy (1-0), a
23-year-old lefty, had the Athletics off balance all night, striking
out eight and walking four.
There was a 40-minute
rain delay before the first pitch and a constant drizzle throughout the game.
The downpour picked up with two outs in the top of the eighth, resulting in
another delay of more than an hour before the game was finally called.
Aaron Crow was credited with the save for pitching a scoreless seventh.
The Royals got two
runs off Oakland starter Graham Godfrey (0-1) in the fourth when Mike Moustakas
doubled home Billy Butler, and then Jeff Francoeur scored on a Humberto Quintero
sacrifice fly.
Mitch Maier added a
run in the seventh with a leadoff homer into the empty right-field seats.
Cliff Pennington
recorded the only hit for Oakland, a one-out double in the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain
made a sensational grab in the second, slamming into the wall and then firing
to first for an 8-4-3 double play … The Royals' two-run fourth
ended a streak of 25 scoreless innings at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum … Royals starters have combined to
allow only five runs in 30 innings.
