Twins 6, Tigers 4: Ryan Doumit had three hits and an RBI and Minnesota's bullpen worked five scoreless innings, helping the visiting Twins give manager Ron Gardenhire his 900th career win and match a season-long four-game win streak.
All 13 of Minnesota's hits were singles, but the Twins were able to string a six together in the four-run fourth inning, including a two-run hit from Trevor Plouffe.
Neither starter made it out of the fifth inning. Detroit's Doug Fister (1-6) was lifted after Joe Mauer's RBI single with no outs in the top of the inning and was charged with six runs on eight hits, losing his third straight start.
Minnesota's Liam Hendriks remained winless in 12 major-league starts, leaving with no outs in the bottom of the fifth after allowing the first four batters of the inning to reach. He allowed four runs on six hits and walked four.
Anthony Swarzak (2-4) relieved Hendriks and worked out of the jam with just one run - on Delmon Young's sacrifice fly - and went on to allow just one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Glen Perkins allowed a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before finished off his third save.
Mauer and Doumit each extended their hitting streaks to 11 games with singles in the four-run fourth.
Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-3 with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly for the Tigers, who have lost their last seven games when they've had a chance to get back to .500.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gardenhire is 900-800 in 11 seasons managing the Twins. … Hendriks did not allow a home run, the first time he has avoided doing so in eight major-league starts this season. … Fister dropped to 1-6 in seven career starts against the Twins. … Mauer had been 0-for-13 against Fister before recording two hits against him Monday. … Twins reliever Alex Burnett pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and has not allowed a run since May 23. … Detroit's Austin Jackson went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
