Diamondbacks 5, Nationals 1: Trevor Cahill tossed 7 1/3 solid innings and Justin Upton drove in a pair of runs as visiting Arizona handed Washington its fifth consecutive loss.
Paul Goldschmidt collected three hits and Miguel Montero added an RBI double for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of their last five contests during their 10-game road trip.
After Aaron Hill was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Upton followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Upton added an RBI single in the ninth inning.
The offense was more than enough for Trevor Cahill (2-2), who allowed one run on six hits. Bryan Shaw bridged the gap to David Hernandez, who struck out two batters in the ninth to preserve the win.
After Jordan Zimmermann (1-2) retired eight straight batters, Arizona managed to get its offense on track in the fifth inning. Goldschmidt singled and advanced to second on shortstop Ian Desmond's error. Two batters later, John McDonald singled to shallow left field to plate Goldschmidt.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Bryce Harper, 19, received a rousing ovation from the crowd at Nationals Park prior to his first home at-bat of his career. He struck out and finished 0-for-3. ... Desmond had an RBI single for the eighth inning for the Nationals, who have scored seven runs during their losing streak. ... Jayson Werth returned to the lineup after sitting out with a migraine. He went 1-for-3. ... Zimmermann permitted four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
