Blue Jays 6, Twins 5 (10): Anthony Gose delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning after Yan Gomes tied the game with a two-out solo homer in the ninth as host Toronto rallied to win the opener of a three-game series between teams fighting to stay out of last place in their divisions.
The Blue Jays were down to their last out before Gomes turned on a 1-0 fastball from closer Glen Perkins for his fourth major-league homer. Gose grounded a single up the middle with two outs in the 10th against Brian Duensing (4-12) to score Adeiny Hechavarria with the winning run.
The Twins loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 10th but couldn't push across a run as Brandon Lyon (4-2) got a popout from Drew Butera and struck out Pedro Florimon on a called third strike.
Trevor Plouffe homered and drove in three runs and Jamey Carroll went 3-for-5 and scored twice for Minnesota, which dropped its third straight to stay a game behind Cleveland for last place in the AL Central. Adam Lind went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Jeff Mathis added a two-run double for the Blue Jays, who moved two games ahead of last-place Boston in the AL East.
Minnesota's Joe Mauer went 1-for-5 with an RBI single, lowering his average to .322. Mauer trails Detroit's Miguel Cabrera by seven points for the AL lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Twins OF Ben Revere recorded his 40th stolen base, becoming the first Minnesota player with 40 steals since Chuck Knoblauch in 1997. … Blue Jays DH Edwin Encarnacion (muscle strain) did not play. Encarnacion has 42 home runs, two behind Cabrera's AL lead. … Blue Jays manager John Farrell was ejected in the 10th inning by home plate umpire Marvin Hudson for arguing after J.P. Arencibia was called out for running out of the baseline when a throw to first after a dropped third strike hit him in the back and caromed into right field.
