Josh Hamilton homered and Derek Holland came within one out of a complete game as the Texas Rangers defeated the host Los Angeles Angels 7-3 on Tuesday to open up a season-high six-game lead atop the American League West.
Holland (11-4) gave up three runs on nine hits and struck out seven as Texas has won five of its last six games to move a season-best 19 games above .500.
The Angels have lost six of their last seven and haven't led in the first two games of the crucial four-game series.
Angels starter Tyler Chatwood (6-9) gave up five runs on eight hits in two innings. The Rangers have a combined 31 hits in their last two games.
The Angels ran into two outs during a disastrous third inning when they scored only once after placing runners at first and third with none out.
Michael Young went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Rangers, who scored at least seven runs in their fifth straight game.
