Jayson Werth scored on a wild pitch by Carlos Marmol with one out in the 10th inning as the Washington Nationals celebrated Independence Day with a 5-4 walkoff triumph over the Chicago Cubs in the nation's capital on Monday afternoon.
Werth drew a leadoff walk from Marcos Mateo (1-2) and moved to second on a sacrifice by pinch-hitter Livan Hernandez. Marmol came on for an injured Mateo and watched Werth steal third on his first offering to Ivan Rodriguez before firing the ball to the backstop on a 2-2 pitch, allowing Werth to score the winning run.
Werth and Laynce Nix each had two RBIs while Henry Rodriguez (3-1) tossed a scoreless inning for the Nationals, who have won eight straight one-run contests at Nationals Park. Each of Washington's last eight victories have been by either one run or in extra innings.
Carlos Pena collected three hits and Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs for the Cubs, who have lost three of four.
Washington scored twice in the first inning but allowed the next four runs before Nix helped forge a 4-4 tie. Nix hit a one-out triple in the sixth and scored on a groundout by Werth, then drew a bases-loaded walk from Kerry Wood an inning later to force in the tying run.
