Max Scherzer pitched six strong innings to post his second win of the season as Detroit trimmed Kansas City 5-2 in the Tigers’ home opener Friday afternoon.
The Tigers (3-4) scored four times in the first inning by taking advantage of some wildness on the part of Royals starting pitcher Kyle Davies, who walked two batters and threw two wild pitches in the inning.
Victor Martinez had a three-run double in the inning and Jhonny Peralta added a run-scoring double.
Scherzer (2-0) scattered seven hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his second save.
Peralta finished with two hits and two RBIs on the day.
Melky Cabrera had an RBI triple in the third and Brett Butler had an RBI single in the seventh for the Royals (4-3).
Davies (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits and walked five in 3 1/3 innings.
