Barry Enright allowed one run in five innings in his major-league debut to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
Chris Young belted a two-run homer and Rusty Ryal drove in a run as Arizona avoided the three-game sweep.
Enright, called up from Double-A Mobile prior to the start, gave up four hits, walked four and struck out five. The 24-year-old right-hander was taking the turn of Edwin Jackson, whose start was pushed back to Friday after throwing 149 pitches in his no-hitter against Tampa Bay last week.
Enright (1-0) allowed a lone run in the first when Matt Holliday's triple scored Albert Pujols, who had reached on a two-out single, but that was it. Four relievers finished off the win as Aaron Heilman worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth for his third save.
Young's two-run blast off starter Jeff Suppan in the fifth broke a 1-1 tie.
Suppan (0-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Third baseman Felipe Lopez's error in the second plated Arizona's first run before Ryal added an RBI single in the sixth.Jason LaRue drove in the Cardinals' other run with a seventh-inning single.
