Mark Teixeira homered twice and Robinson Cano added a two-run triple as the New York Yankees secured a 6-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday on a day in which it looked like Mariners ace Cliff Lee was headed to the Yankees before being traded to Texas.
Lee, who was scheduled to start for Seattle on Friday, appeared set to be traded to the Yankees, but talks broke down and the former Cy Young winner was sent to the Rangers for first baseman Justin Smoak and three minor-leaguers.
The Mariners could have used him as David Pauley was forced to make his first start since Sept. 26, 2008. Pauley (0-1) allowed three runs - one earned - on two hits in five-plus innings.
Yankees All-Star Phil Hughes (11-2) was better, allowing one run on six hits in seven innings. He had five strikeouts with no walks as New York won its season-high seventh in a row.
The Yankees broke the game open with a four-run sixth, including RBIs by Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson and Cano’s two-run triple to center.
Teixeira went deep in the first and later hit his 17th homer in the ninth.
Jose Lopez drove in Chone Figgins with a double in the sixth for Seattle’s lone run.
