Catcher Carlos Santana doubled and homered in his second major-league game and Fausto Carmona pitched a complete game in the Cleveland Indians’ 7-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Santana, one of baseball’s top prospects, doubled home a pair of runs in the second inning and homered in the fifth in his sixth career at-bat. It was all the run support Carmona needed as the Indians earned their fourth straight victory.
Carmona (5-5) pitched his second complete game this season, limiting the Nationals to three hits while striking out seven. He did not walk a batter.
Russell Branyan hit his eighth homer of the season in the eighth inning off Nationals starter J.D. Martin (0-2), who was drafted and developed by the Indians. Martin endured his toughest start of the season, allowing six earned runs in 7 2-3 innings.
The Indians will try for the sweep on Sunday as Washington’s Stephen Strasburg makes his second major league start.
