Jed Lowrie had four hits and three RBIs as the Boston Red Sox overcame six New York home runs to outslug the Yankees 10-8 Friday night, knocking them out of top spot in the American League East.
Combined with Tampa's 5-3 victory over Seattle, the Yankees dropped a half-game back of the Rays in the AL East.
Lowrie had three singles and a three-run homer, and also scored three times. Bill Hall added a three-run shot as the Red Sox built a 10-1 lead, then held off a spirited New York charge.
Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez each belted a pair of homers in defeat for the Yankees, while Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson also went deep.
Josh Beckett (6-5) earned the win for Boston despite allowing four home runs. He was charged with five runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Andy Pettitte (11-3) was shelled for seven runs on 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work.
